Voice feedback provides an option of accessing information from the mobile screen without using tactile or visual cues from the device.

How to Use

Audio feedback aids in hands-free operation for safety in certain situations, like driving, and act as an assistive user interface method for those with some sight impairments. It is usually in response to voice-activated commands like dialing, looking up contacts, searching for information in the web etc.

Audio feedback is activated by pressing a physical key or a soft key on the touch screen, usually with the image of a speaker on it. Then the user speaks out or types in his command. The feedback feature reads the information that is the result of the voice command off of the screen for the user.

Considerations

  • Make sure that voice feedback responds to the overall audio settings on the phone.
  • When a headset is attached (either physically or by a link such as Bluetooth), the playback should default to this device, and use the last set in-call volume for this device.
  • Content read must be identical to that printed on the screen and allow the user to switch between the screen and the audio channels.
  • Avoid mixing readback of commands and text. When the two must be used together, use delays, tones, changes in voice and clear syntax (such as "You said...") to indicate the difference.
  • Text-to-voice translation of names, especially, can be difficult to understand or improperly pronounced, so it should be undertaken with care.
